Nel solo anno 2008 Lee ha ricevuto importanti riconoscimenti in tutto il mondo:
la Competizione Mondiale 2008 di arte a 3 dimensioni ( pittura ) organizzata dall'Accademia Mondiale e Universale Olandese;
la Competizione per Acquerelli del RWS / Sunday Times in Inghilterra;
la Royal West dell'Accademia d'Inghilterra 156esima Edizione Autunnale;
la L'Chayim Mostra d'Arte negli USA ( secondo premio );
quattro Saloni Internazionali d'Autunno Francesi.
È stato invitato per esporre in musei e pubbliche esposizioni molto rinomate: Accademia d'Arte della Russia, Bankside Gallery di Londra, Museo d'Arte di Shanghai in Cina, Museo Haggin in USA, Museo di Kyoto in Giappone, Galleria Gabrichidze in Belgio, Galleria Silver Brush in Finlandia, Biennale di Firenze del 2009 in Italia, solo per nominarne alcune.
La sua creatività ha ricevuto riconoscimenti in numerose e celebri associazioni dedicate all'arte in Europa, america ed Australia che hanno richiesto la sua partecipazione, tra queste vi è la Royal Society for the Encouragement of Art, Manufactures & Commerce, meglio conosciuta come RSA fondata nel 1754, - la prima società delle arti che ricevette il titolo di "Reale" nella storia dell'Inghilterra.
Ispirato dalla sua pratica Buddhista basata sulla cultura cinesee, Lee ha sviluppato la cosidetta "pittura ad olio dall'energia totemica" per incorporare nell'arte occidentale della pittura ad olio la profondità della cultura cinese e della sensibilità zen. Egli è conosciuto in particolare per inserire nelle sue opere le immagini "totemiche" che testimoniano la saggezza della antica civiltà. Le sue opere catturano l'armonia del paradiso e della terra, e intendono risvegliare la gloria, la perfettibilità e la benevolenza dell'umanità. Egli desidera che lo spettatore sia in grado di condividere le sue visioni, e possa acquisire una comprensione più profonda della spiritualità, della mente, della natura e dell'esistenza e possa quindi raggiungere uno stato di quiete e serenità.

La sua arte non è solamente radicata nell'arte astratta in senso stretto, poiché essa ci richiama l'ispirazione delle opere di Balla, Kandinskij, Klee, Arp, Mirò e Matisse. La sua ricerca artistica perciò ha molti riferimenti che sono anche sintomi di una vasta preparazione culturale. L'opera di Lee Sun-Don stabilisce il proprio originale e distintivo stile grazie alla combinazione di molteplici filosofie di linguaggio che evadono dall'ordine formale.
La forma è la soglia attraverso cui l'immaginazione perde le proprie facoltà. In questo caso, la pittura è lo strumento che dirige un universo linguistico non verso un sistema rigido ma, con l'intenzione di rimuovere un pregiudizio, verso una sottile disciplina basata sulla rimozione della certezza a beneficio di una rigorosa e strutturata probabilità.

È importante per l'artista poter mettere la propria anima sulla tela, il Maestro Lee è in grado di far ciò. L'arte che il Maestro Zen desidera esprimere è un cammino che ci permette di comprendere meglio l'insegnamento del Buddha tramite alcuni simbolismi. Attraverso il dipinto noi.... cogliamo gli aspetti semantici e i significati dei simboli.

Un pittore ha il compito di ricevere e trasmettere tutti i segnali e di riflettere tutti gli aspetti del mondo utilizzando la mente come uno specchio limpido che rappresenti l'esistenza. Questo è il così detto "Grande Dao" che procede, esso giunge e si manifesta. Le nuvole corrono via e il sole brilla; le acque sono limpide e le montagne verdi. Con tale mente in armonia con il grande universo, il Maestro Lee mostra il suo rispetto e la sua umiltà verso il Buddha oscurando le sue doti e il suo talento nella pittura. Egli semplicemente dimentica le tecniche: egli è come un bimbo innocente, che coglie un bouquet di fiori di campo per sua madre senza alcun senso presunzione o modestia, bontà o cattiveria, ma per semplice amore. Quando siamo diretti verso la glira del Buddha dalle opere di Lee, potremo ancora tenere presente della tecnica utilizzata nelle sue opere? I colori e le linee divengono tutti parte del cammino e della manifestazione del Grande Dao.

Non conosco molto del Buddhismo, ma gradisco molto le opere di Sun-Don. Il mio istinto mi dice che le sue opere sono semplici e ispirate; l'uso del colore è marcato e potente e le pennellate non sono mai ossequiose o arroganti ma sono equilibrate. È come se egli stesse pregando mentre, pacatamente, prova a condividere assieme a noi qualcosa che sia oltre gli schemi e al di là della pittura e delle pennellate. Il suo stile pittorico, il fascino del tratto, l'essenza delle sue opere non sono comuni. Le sue opere svelano l'aura della serenità e della compostezza, ed il linguaggio della sua espressività è pulito e fresco. Credo che per quelli che studiano la pratica Buddhista, sia semplice percepire anche molti più profondi messaggi da queste opere.

L'intento dell'artista è quello di dimostrare l'apertura mentale, il pensiero positivo e lo spirito dell'estetica Zen. In questo senso il suo intento è succedaneo alla tradizione della letteratura cinese della "contemplazione Zen" che emerse durante il periodo Tang-Song ( 618-1279 ); altrimenti, egli si avventura nell'esplorare le frontiere dell'arte moderna. Il tema dominante della sua pittura esprime la sensibilità dei nostri tempi; inoltre l'essenza delle sue opere apporta risonanza spirituale e risveglia il fruitore. Ciò che Lee compie è già trascendenza oltre il limite della religione.
